OUR MISSION STATEMENT Our vision is to provide opportunities of positive social development for special needs children who struggle with maladaptive behavior patterns. We do this by providing fun, caring, therapeutic group activities and camps professionally geared to meet this need. This fosters a positive ripple effect within the family unit and an inclusive culture within the community. S. Supportive Staff Those working as STEPS Camp staff are treated fairly and with respect, thus inspiring the same caring and compassionate attitude towards the children we serve. Our staff embraces a positive solution-finding perspective to any difficulty and challenge which we face. T. Therapeutic Environment A therapeutic environment is the foundation on which all our activities and programs build upon. This begins with the assertive attitude to be calm, aware, and respectful which communicates to our campers that they are in a safe and caring place, fostering their self‑esteem. We are committed to provide a stimulating, sensitive environment that supports the child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. E. Experiential Learning Early childhood research shows that young children learn primarily through play. It allows children to learn social skills and develop friendships. When a child experiences success in play and is encouraged to communicate thoughts and feelings in a positive way, while accepting responsibility for actions, the child learns social skills that will last a lifetime. P. Positive Experience Children learn best when they are having fun. It is scientifically proven that our strongest memories are associated with an emotion, and happiness is one of our most enjoyable emotions. Through exciting activities and fun, our campers gain a positive self-concept, retain memories, and help in developing warm relationships. S. Shared Purpose We are passionate about meeting our mission with the families that we serve. Our services provided support and encouragement to the parents and family members of behaviorally challenging kids.
