Camper Elegibility Criteria

STEPS Camp activities, staff and schedule is developed specifically to serve children with these diagnoses, yet at any time STEPS Camp reserves the right to decline any applicant who is not suitable for participation and/or camper whose behavior consistently disrupts the camp activities, and/or poses a risk to the care of other campers.

Siblings and friends who are not diagnosed are most welcome. The safety of every camper is the organizations top most priority.

High-functioning Autism

High-functioning autism (HFA) is a term applied to people with autism who are deemed to be cognitively "higher functioning" (with an IQ of greater than 70) than other people with autism. Individuals with HFA or Asperger syndrome exhibit deficits in areas of communication, emotion recognition and expression, and social interaction. High-functioning autism is characterized by features very similar to those of Asperger syndrome. (HFA is not a recognized diagnosis)

Asperger syndrome (AS) or simply Asperger's

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Asperger syndrome (AS) as one of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which are a spectrum of psychological conditions that are characterized by abnormalities of social interaction and communication that pervade the individual's functioning, and by restricted and repetitive interests and behavior.

 ADHD & ADD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) formerly attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder in which there are significant problems with executive functions (e.g., attentional control and inhibitory control) that cause attention deficits, hyperactivity, or impulsiveness which is not appropriate for a person's age. Inattention, hyperactivity, disruptive behavior, and impulsivity are common in ADHD.

PDD

Pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) refers to a group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of multiple basic functions including socialization and communication.
